Universe: Dark Crystal
I wanted to give my version of a Dark Crystal character some old traditional art feeling, without being traditionally painted. I kept the coloring simple by using digital watercolor stains and pushed the shading with a rough 6B pencil brush.
I based myself on the original movie and the artbooks, while using some references from the series for the clothing. The character's clothing is inspired by two of the Gelfling tribes: the Vapra (most cultured and intelectual clan) and the Spriton (very skilled on crafting weapons and textile).
Universe: Avatar The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra
I tried to keep the style similar to mine while replicating the movement of the show. I also toned down the palete to look more dull and fit the show aesthetics.
I'm not very knowledgeable of martial art poses and the Avatar animation style. I wanted to be as precise as possible when drawing an earth bending move, so I took the scene when Korra spars with Tensin's childrens for this one. I based the clothes on a few different characters from the series. I thought it would be interesting to add protecting gloves with elbow guards because pieces of rock could bounce and harm my arms (I'm very fond of my hands!).
Universe: Studio Ghibli
I referenced when Howl eats his heart for this pose. It is one of my favorite scenes from Howl's Moving Castle. The heroines of Ghibli movies normally wear realistic and simple clothing. That is why I wanted to keep my clothes realistic too so I went for a look that I use a lot.
Universe: Lord of the Rings
I chose a Hobbit for the character based of Lord of the Rings because I wanted to play with the shapes. I wanted a big head with messy hair, a very simple but recognizable walking stick and thick legs and big feet. I made my own clothes based on how Hobbits normally like to dress well.
Universe: Pokémon
Pokémon character designs never cease to amaze me. I was initially going to draw her facing to the front, but I thought it would be nice to add variety to this series by adding a back to front pose. For her clothes, I designed something I would love to wear as a trainer, focusing on urban style, contrast and eye candy colors.
You can always tell Pokémon trainers design by their silhouette. There's the hand or wrist movement with the Pokéball, the strong and confident pose and some other details like the fun action lines for some of the characters.
Thank you for visiting. I hope you liked this universes study.
